People who know me well joke that I’m a hobbyist. Growing up, I tried knitting, beading, tennis, architecture, hair wrapping, french braiding — the list goes on.
I laugh along when people point out the many half-finished projects I’ve left in my wake, but I’m also deeply insecure about this quality. I am, above all, worried that I’m the kind of person who doesn’t finish things. Who leaves projects undone. Who never finishes the metaphorical scarf.
While I don’t think there’s anything wrong with poking fun at yourself, I’m trying to reframe how I think about my ephemeral curiosity. I’m not flaky or unreliable; I’m sensitive to when things no longer serve me. And there are plenty of things that fall into this category.
But, I tell myself, BUT! There is a very small, very selective category of things — including writing, reading, running, yoga — that you’ve devoted yourself to for a long time (a decade-plus each). You’re developing new passions that may just belong in this camp, too — but they’ll have to earn their spot. It’s an exclusive club.
This is my way of telling you that, after a long hiatus, I’ve decided to part ways with Substack. It turns out it was a passing hobby, not a calling, passion, or any of those saccharine words we use to describe what we love. If you have a paid subscription, you can expect a refund today. (Please feel free to message me if you have any issues.) I’ll leave my page up for now, so last year’s posts live on.
I’m off to focus on something new. I’ve started messing around with YouTube, so you can subscribe here if you want to stay connected. I wish everyone well. Thank you, thank you for spending time with me on here :)
With love,
Kells
